Digital Signature Certificates (DSCs) can be obtained paperlessly through the “Aadhaar Offline eKYC” process for Aadhaar card holders. The application proceeds after the applicant is digitally verified as part of the Aadhaar-based KYC procedure. Applying for a DSC, generating the certificate, and downloading it is quick and typically takes 15–20 minutes.

Under the Information Technology (IT) Act 2000, any individual or organisation authorised to issue digital signature certificates is recognised as a Certifying Authority (CA). A prospective CA undergoes an audit by the Controller of Certifying Authorities at the Ministry of IT to ensure all compliance requirements are met before a licence is granted.

Overview - An Overview of Digital signature certificate (DSC)

Digital Signature Certificates are secure digital keys issued by certifying authorities to authenticate and confirm the identity of the individual holding them. Using public-key encryption, digital signatures are created.

In a digital signature certificate (DSC), the user’s name, pin code, country, email address, date of issuance, and certifying authority’s name are included.

Benefits - Benefits of Digital Signature Certificates

The primary reason a business seeks ISO certification is to comply with legal requirements or contractual obligations. Certain companies and government tenders may only accept services from ISO-certified providers. Other reasons for following ISO standards include:

Used to verify the individual’s personal information online.

Digitally signing PDF files is far quicker than physically signing documents and scanning them to send via email. A holder of a Digital Signature Certificate can carry out or authorise business activities without being physically present.

A digitally signed document gives the receiver confidence in the signer’s authenticity. With such documents, they do not have to worry about forged documents preventing them from taking action.

Checklist - Compliance With Statutory Requirements Through DSC

  • Individuals and entities required to have their accounts audited must use a digital signature when filing income tax returns.

  • Additionally, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs mandates that all reports, applications, and forms be signed digitally.

  • GST registration also requires a digital signature on the application.

  • A digital signature is necessary for filing applications, making amendments, and submitting other related forms.

Process - Application for a Digital Signature Certificate Online

With Nimble Trio, completing your DSC online registration is simple and can be done in just three easy steps:

Step 1: Form Submission

We collect basic details such as your name, gender, address, nationality, country, email ID, mobile number, and the intended use of the DSC. This could include company incorporation, MCA e-filing, IT filing, GST filing, foreign trade, e-tenders, or personal use. We also guide you in selecting the correct class of DSC and completing the form accurately.

Step 2: Online Documentation

We gather and submit all necessary documents—such as PAN card, address proof, passport, and others—for verification.

Step 3: Fee Payment and Verification

After completing the payment, your documents are validated in two ways, with information cross-checked against your PAN card as on the Income Tax portal:

Video Recording:  You will receive a link via your registered mobile number and email, where you will record details such as your name and date of birth, and submit it for verification.

SMS Verification:  You will receive your DSC application ID via SMS, and you must reply with your application ID, name, mobile number, and email ID to complete the process.

Classes of DSC

A DSC should be obtained according to the purpose of the request and the type of applicant. Certifying authorities issue three types of certificates:

  • Class 1 Certificates: Issued to individuals or private subscribers, these certificates verify that the subscriber’s name and email address are recorded in the certifying authority’s database.

  • Class 2 Certificates: Issued to company directors or authorised signatories, Class 2 certificates are required for e-filing with the Registrar of Companies (ROC).

  • Class 3 Certificates: Needed for participating in online auctions and e-tenders in India, Class 3 certificates enable secure digital transactions for such platforms.

FAQ's

Digital Signature Certificates (DSCs) electronically verify your identity. A DSC ensures complete privacy of information exchanged during online transactions. It allows data to be signed or encrypted so that only the intended recipient can access it. Digital signatures also confirm that the information has not been altered during transmission and authenticate you as the sender.

Under India’s Information Technology Act 2000, Digital Signature Certificates (DSCs) are legally recognised. Licensed Certifying Authorities issue DSCs in compliance with the provisions of this Act.

Trademark or patent filings require a Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate for companies or organisations. Class 3 is the highest level of digital signature and can be issued for one or two years. Users must renew their Class 3 DSC once it expires.

Income Tax, ROC, and MCA filings require a Class 2 Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). Class 2 DSCs are valid for one or two years, after which they must be renewed. These certificates can be issued to both individuals and organisations.

A DSC issued by a licensed Certifying Authority (CA) is required for e-filing on the MCA Portal.

Root certificates are either unsigned public vital certificates or self-signed certificates that identify the Root Certificate Authority (CA). The root certificate is an anchor of trust in a digital certificate, which validates the entire certification chain.
