ISO 9001

ISO 9001 is an internationally recognised standard that outlines the criteria for establishing a robust Quality Management System (QMS). Organisations adopt this standard to showcase their capability to consistently deliver products and services that not only satisfy customer expectations but also comply with regulatory requirements. It remains the most widely implemented standard within the ISO 9000 family and is the only one eligible for certification.

Originally introduced in 1987 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)—a global body consisting of more than 160 national standards organisations—ISO 9001 has evolved over time. The latest version of the standard was released in September 2015, further strengthening its framework for quality assurance and continuous improvement.

Difference Between ISO 9000 and ISO 9001

Although ISO 9001 belongs to the broader ISO 9000 family of quality management standards, there are clear distinctions between the two. ISO 9000 mainly provides the terminology, concepts, and definitions that guide the entire quality management framework. On the other hand, ISO 9001 is the standard organisations must actually implement—and be audited against—to achieve certification. It requires activities like gap analysis and internal audits to verify compliance.

ISO 9000 acts as the foundation that explains and supports all other standards in the series, whereas ISO 9001 focuses on practical execution and the application of quality management requirements. Both standards, however, are built on core quality principles such as strong customer orientation, leadership and engagement, effective process management, continuous improvement, and performance-driven operations.

In terms of similarities, ISO 9000 and ISO 9001 fall under the same quality management umbrella and share consistent terminology. Both demand periodic evaluation and updates to ensure they continue delivering high-quality outcomes.
